The Dow Jones Industrial Average popped 0.82% by mid-day in New York, after hitting its 71st record since last year's election earlier in the session. Fueling the gains were big earnings beats from the likes of Caterpillar Inc. (CAT) - Get Report , 3M (MMM) - Get Report and McDonald's Inc. (MCD) - Get Report -- big names with a global reach -- that were buttressed by stronger-than-expected U.S. numbers from General Motors (GM) - Get Report and Lockheed Martin (LMT) - Get Report .
