President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Sonny Perdue to be the next Secretary of Agriculture. Perdue would oversee the United States Forest Service, the United States Food Safety and Inspection Service, the Food Stamp Program and the United States Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service.

Perdue was once a Democrat. In the 1980s he served on the Houston County Planning and Zoning Commission as a member of the DNC. He later represented the 18th district in the Georgia General Assembly from 1991 to 2001.

Perdue switched to the Republican party in 1998. He then served as the governor of Georgia from 2003 until 2011. Perdue wasn't an early supporter of Trump, initially endorsing Trump's bitter rival Jeb Bush.

There could be more than one Perdue in government under the Trump administration -- Sonny Perdue's cousin David Perdue, a senator from Georgia elected in 2014, is also under administration consideration.
