President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Dan Coats to be the next Director of National Intelligence. Coats was the U.S. ambassador to Germany for President George W. Bush from 2001 to 2005. He just finished a six-year term as one of Indiana's U.S. senators. Coats served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. In 1993, Coats helped author "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," the policy that banned openly gay men and women from serving in the military. In 2010, he voted against the policy's repeal. "I think it is a reasonable means of dealing with the issue. People are not denied service, but their behavior lifestyle can't be such that it interrupts the morale of the fighting unit," Coats said in a 2010 interview.
