CES 2019: The Future Is Here and it's a Walking Car
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a...walking car?
Hyundai showed off the technology at CES 2019.
The company is developing Elevate, the first-ever vehicle with moveable legs to help with rapid resilient transportation for disaster assistance. Elevate is the first Ultimate Mobility Vehicle (UMV).
The car company thinks that this kind of vehicle could even be used for interplanetary travel. Yes, that's right, Hyundai thinks could be used in missions to Mars.
Is that futuristic enough for you?
Hyundai blended technology found in electric cars and robots. The robotic leg architecture has six degrees of freedom and can also fold up into a stowed drive-mode.
While these ideas sound cool, it's important to keep in mind that Hyundai hasn't built a full-sized prototype just yet. The company is currently working with a miniature scale to see how the car could eventually work. But, hey, we still get some nifty videos of what we can expect from a full-sized Elevate.
