Macy's (M) , Walmart (WMT) , JCPenney (JCP) and Nordstrom (JWN) reported earnings.

These retailers are taking steps to bolster their digital prowess amid competition from Amazon (AMZN) .

Walmart's ecommerce sales rose 40% year over year for its most recent quarter, while Nordstrom's digital sales grew 23%.
