Building a sense of commitment to a long term enterprise is the key to maintaining a family business through the years, said Peter Gordon, Director at William Grant & Sons and a fifth generation family member. Gordon added that keeping younger family members engaged turns their focus toward the business as opposed to the ownership and money issues that often create rifts. He said William Grant & Sons has a family council and charter that sets out broad guidelines for family members that will allow them to flourish at the spirits company. Finally, Gordon said it is also of the utmost importance to make the rest of the employees feel like family as well.
