Home Depot Computer System Hacked, Secret Service to Investigate

Shares of Home Depot ended the day lower on Tuesday after the company confirmed that hackers broke into its computer system connecting thousands of stores in the U.S. and Canada. The payment system was compromised at more than 2,000 locations. The company says there is no evidence that credit and debit card numbers were stolen, but millions of shoppers' personal information could have been leaked. Home Depot is the largest home improvement chain in North America. It's the latest retailer to experience a large scale data breach after other high profile attacks at stores like Target and Neiman Marcus. Home Depot began investigating a possible breach a week ago after independent journalist Brian Krebs said shoppers' data could have been affected. CEO Frank Blake said, "We apologize for the frustration and anxiety this causes our customers." Home Depot is offering credit monitoring to people who shopped with a credit or debit card since April. The Secret Service is reportedly working on identifying the hackers.
