Shares of General Electric (GE) - Get Report were higher Tuesday after the company said it is expanding its software division. The move is an effort to leverage competition against companies like Alphabet's (GOOGL) - Get Report Google and Amazon (AMZN) - Get Report . General Electric has ventured into software as CEO Jeff Immelt works to reorient one of the nation's oldest industrial giants, according to the Wall Street Journal. The company now offers base pay, bonuses and equity to GE Digital employees, similar to other Silicon Valley competitors. GE Digital was established as a stand-alone software unit in 2015 and has about 28,000 employees.
