Video games have become a major source for moviemakers.
Some of the top new movie franchises come from video games: Warcraft, Angry Birds, Pokemon. Turning those games into movies creates another revenue stream for the video game developers.
Activision (ATV) - Get Report , which created World of Warcraft, launched an in-house studio to create its own feature films and television series in 2014. The film Resident Evil: The Final Chapter is expected to generate $15 million in its opening weekend.
One negative for large film studios is that the films sometimes have a relatively narrow audience.
