The December jobs report is released on Friday. Analysts expect nonfarm payrolls to rise by 175,000. According to Craig Erlam, a senior market analyst at Oanda, based in London, the report isn't as important as past jobs numbers. That's because the jobs report is typically parsed through the lens of Federal Reserve policy. The Fed just raised rates last month and the markets are more focused on expectations of fiscal stimulus. Erlam added that a slight rise in the unemployment rate would actually be positive news because it signals more people have reentered the workforce.
