The results of the 2016 holiday shopping season are in. MasterCard (MA) - Get Report data show total spending, excluding autos and gas, rose 4% year over year from Nov. 1 to Dec. 24. The big winners were furniture and men's apparel, while jewelry sales were negative year over year. Amid the hype of online retailers such as Amazon (AMZN) - Get Report , Sarah Quinlan, senior vice president of market insights at MasterCard, points out that online spending only accounted for 8.6% of total spending over the holiday shopping season, compared to 7.6% during the 2015 holiday shopping season.
