Has This Been the Weirdest Presidential Campaign Ever? A Former Governor Says Yes.
Business leaders are already compiling their wish list for the incoming president. But first, we have to get through an election, and that can't happen soon enough, says John Engler, president of the Business Roundtable, which is an association of chief executives at leading U.S. corporations. "I'm like most Americans, I'm real glad to have it over with," he says. Engler, a former governor of Michigan, also commented on the tone of the campaign, as well as its many twists and turns. "It's been pretty nasty. I wasn't around for the really nasty ones, when Andrew Jackson was running and a few of the others, way way back when," he said. "In the modern era, I don't think there's anything that compares to this. And there's nothing that compares to it in terms of weirdness too, the things that have happened and continue to happen." Engler also talked about what the Business Roundtable would like to see the next president do once taking office. The list includes tax reform, infrastructure investment, a commitment to workforce training, and tackling immigration issues.
