Hamptonites Rushing to Rose Wine This Summer, More Than A Fad

It's all about pink in the Hamptons this summer, as in rose wine. And, we're not talking about the horrid, sugary, blush wines of the 1990s. These days Hamptonites are pouring a plentitude of dry roses. Many hail from local Long Island Vineyards, such as Wolffer Estate in Sagaponack and Channing Daughters in Bridgehampton. Domaine Ott and Whispering Angel are among the more popular French roses appearing on American tables. And, thanks to a growing pack of pinkophiles, the U.S. is now the world's second largest consumer of rose wine (after France of course). No one is certain why rose is blooming. But many wine lovers credit the appealing color, refreshing taste and attractive price. Most of the popular pinks sell for less than $30 a bottle.
