Google bought wireless communications company Alpental Technologies, a startup that has been developing 5G technologies. Google has confirmed the acquisition, which occurred a few weeks back, but gave no other details. Now, there's speculation that it's actually a step toward Google becoming a wireless service provider. According to reports, prior to the acquisition, Alpental was working on developing 5G technologies that could have applications in connecting fiber to the home and Google's municipal Wi-Fi offerings. Google has already built a Fiber internet service in Kansas City, which it's currently expanding to other areas.
