Worldwide personal-computer shipments fell 1.7% in the third quarter, largely due to weakness in emerging regions which outweighed improved corporate demand, according to market researcher IDC. The decline was smaller than the 4.1% drop IDC had originally projected. Sales in the U.S. jumped more than 4%, as companies continued to buy updated machines for new employees or upgrade systems from older ones. Lenovo, Hewlett-Packard and Dell all saw higher shipments, with Lenovo at the top spot worldwide, with growth of 11% in the third quarter, giving the company a 20% market share. Hewlett-Packard was second, followed by Dell, Acer and Apple in the fifth spot.
