Asking for a raise at work is enough to send anybody into a cold sweat. Few people like talking about money, especially with their bosses. But to get paid what you deserve, you have to ask for it. Before asking for a raise, do your research and outline a clearly defined request. Practice in front of the mirror or with a trusted friend. Even better, find a mentor in your field and ask them for help. Schedule a meeting with your boss, preferably on a day when they're not busy or stressed. If your boss says no the first time, set clear expectations of what you need to accomplish to get a raise. Do everything you can to achieve those goals. Once you do, schedule another meeting. As much as your boss may appreciate you, they're busy. It's up to you to keep the ball rolling.
