Get Ready For More Reducing, Recycling and Reusing in 2016
The majority of adults around the world now say society has an obligation to reuse materials and reduce the amount of trash it creates and that trend is likely to gain in popularity in the coming year. Ford Motor's Futurist Sheryl Connelly said, 'Those people who play in the green space know the mantra, reduce, reuse, repair, recycle. But what if you can go beyond that and extract value from your waste. Take trash and turn it into something more meaningful?' That's a question businesses, governments and individuals have started asking themselves. For example, ever wish the packaging for everyday things you buy could just melt away? At Ford, the automaker has a program called 'farm to car' where they are taking soy products and wheat shaft and using it to create plastics and insulation. Ford is also working with H.J. Heinz on the use of tomato skins. 'We're taking the skins of tomatoes and trying to take that tomato fiber and turn it into a process that helps us make plastics for wiring harness. It's still in the early stages but it just shows how powerful these opportunities can be in terms of reducing your waste.'
