Ford's New Aluminum F-150 Truck Could Be Game-Changer for Industry
For Ford, there's no denying the all-new F-150, a truck four years in the making, may well be its biggest product launch ever. The challenge for the engineering team, make the truck significantly lighter without compromising towing power. Ford took the F-150's a steel truck body and put it on a diet by replacing steel with high-grade aluminum. High grade aluminum is used in airplanes and by the U.S. military. A lighter weight truck, about 700 pounds lighter, will also translate to more fuel efficiency. But, while official numbers on miles per gallon have not been released, the new F-150 could get somewhere around 25 miles a gallon when driving on the highway. Ford is banking much of its future success on the truck. Ford is expected to make roughly $9.000 in profit from the sale of each truck, that's about double what it makes from selling cars. Ford says the base price for the new truck will start at around $25,000 and go all the way up to $61,000. TheStreet's Ruben Ramirez reports from San Antonio, Texas.
