It's safe to say that privately held Flywheel is no longer just a fad. The boutique gym operator with 40 locations across the country, has legions of people shelling out big bucks each month for intense cardio sessions on stationary bikes. One key ingredient to Flywheel's success is the use of data in its classes, essentially fueling people to compete with one another (which is always addicting).

"This is the area of fitness that is exploding right now," says Sarah Robb O'Hagan, CEO of Flywheel. The former president of Equinox Holdings (which so happens to be the parent company of rival SoulCycle), Nike (NKE) - Get Report and Gatorade executive joined Flywheel in February, and is now focused on taking the cycling brand to the next level in what is the $25.8 billion U.S. health club industry.
