Prior to being called the National Football League in 1922, the league was called the American Professional Football Association and the American Professional Football Conference before that. The NFL’s season is shorter and has fewer scheduled games than any other major American professional sport but that doesn’t stop it from being watched by millions. In 1966, Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt, came up with the name 'Super Bowl', inspired by a toy called the Super Ball. Super Bowl XLVI between the New York Giants and New England Patriots in 2012 was the most-watched game in NFL history.
