Yahoo! was started at Stanford University in 1994 by two electrical engineering graduate students, Jerry Yang and David Filo. Yahoo! is an acronym for 'Yet Another Hierarchical Officious Oracle'. Because the word Yahoo was already being used by a barbecue sauce company, Yang and Filo added the exclamation point to the name in order to gain control of the trademark. Yahoo! went public in 1996. In 1997 Yahoo! acquired webmail service Four11, which then became Yahoo! Mail. By 1999 its stock price had doubled and it was one of the few companies to survive the dot-com bubble burst. Yahoo! purchased photo sharing service Flickr in 2005. Marissa Mayer was named Yahoo! CEO in 2012.
