Shares of Exxon Mobil (XOM) - Get Report were in focus on Thursday after a Suffolk Superior Court judge ordered the U.S. oil major to comply with Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey's investigation. Healey is looking into whether the energy giant misled consumers when it denied the impact of fossil fuels on the climate.

Wednesday's court decision means Exxon must now hand over documents dating back to 1976 on the company's research on carbon emissions and climate change.

"The court affirmed the longstanding authority of the Attorney General to investigate fraud," Healey spokesperson Emalie Gainey said in a written statement.

An Exxon Mobil spokesperson says the company is reviewing the ruling to determine the next steps.
