Indices, and mining stocks including Rio Tinto and BHP Billiton in particular, were also buoyed by a recovery in China, where authorities intervened to stem a plunge in shares. In London Associated British Foods was the lead gainer on the FTSE 100 after reiterating its full-year forecast in a reassuring third-quarter sales update in which it said it has contained the impact of a strong dollar at its Primark fashion chain.
