European Central Bank Leaves Rates Unchanged; Inflation Still Remains Low
The European Central Bank announced no changes to its policy.
After major changes to its monetary policy in December, the European Central Bank left interest rates unchanged in its January policy meeting, the bank announced Thursday. The central bank also maintained its vow to continue its monthly pace of asset purchases of €80 billion ($85 billion) until March and to decrease that amount to €60 billion starting in April.
Analysts weren't surprised by the decisions. According to Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at Oanda, based in London, it's too early to start talking about the ECB's exit from supporting the economy, given how inflation continues to undershoot the central bank's target.
