Economic numbers like GDP and the unemployment rate may dominate the financial news, yet investors are better off ignoring them, says Zachary Karabell, author of "The Leading Indicators". Most of the figures are misleading, says Karabell, because they are portrayed as hard facts when in reality they are merely averages that gloss over huge disparities. Individuals would be better served creating so-called bespoke indicators based on local data relevant to the user's needs.
