Dish Network celebrated a second-quarter profit when it reported quarterly results on Wednesday. Net income of $2.13.3 million, or 46 cents a share, compared to a loss of $11.1 million, or 2 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue climbed 5.7% to $3.7 billion. Tighter cost control and narrower subscriber losses (44,000 compared to 78,000 last year) helped the company to turn profitable. The news was welcome given the tough environment Dish is coming up against. Consolidation in the pay-TV industry has been growing, meaning Dish will be up against larger corporations with deeper pockets. This year alone, Comcast has paired with Time Warner Cable, and AT&T with DirecTV.
