Director Christopher Nolan is back on top at the box office. The Director's new movie Dunkirk shot to success over the weekend taking an estimated $50.5 million, according to Box Office Guru. It was the first non-franchise movie to secure the top box office spot so far this summer. Nolan is the director behind the successful Batman trilogy, The Prestige and Inception.
Another movie that had a stellar opening weekend was Girls Trip taking an estimated $30.4 million. Girls Trip has made waves as all the principal roles are played by black women - a rare occurrence in Hollywood.
Spider-Man Homecoming was third highest grossing movie over the weekend with an estimated $22 million. War for the Planet of the Apes took fourth place as earnings took a sharp dive down to $20.4 million.
