Costco's Sales Rise in December in a Lackluster Retail Environment
Costco delivered on sales in December, and higher member fees could be on the way.
While some retailers struggled in December, Costco (COST) - Get Report did not. Same-store sales in the U.S. rose 3% in the five week period ending Jan. 1; for the month, overall sales were up 5% to $13.07 billion. Meantime, media reports say UBS analysts predict Costco will raise its membership fees by nearly 10% this year. That would push annual fees to $60 for its basic membership, and $120 for executive membership. Costco hasn't confirmed a fee hike is on the way, but it also hasn't ruled one out, according to reports.
