Good morning, it’s Friday, June 26. I’m Katherine Ross and here’s your daily coronavirus update.
There are over 9.6 million cases of the virus worldwide, with over 489,000 deaths.
The U.S. has over 2.4 million cases with over 124,000 deaths.
Brazil has 1.2 million cases and nearly 55,000 reported deaths.
On Thursday, the U.S. reported over 39,300 new infections, which surpassed the previous record that had been set just a day earlier.
Texas, on its own, reported 5,996 new cases. That’s alongside a record high for hospitalizations.
CDC Director Robert Redfield said Thursday that the actual number of coronavirus cases in the United States is probably 10 times higher than what has been confirmed by officials through testing.
Later Friday, the White House Coronavirus Task Force will meet for the first time in about two months. The event will be led by Vice President Pence.
Former Vice President and Democratic presidential hopeful Joe Biden said that if he was president he would mandate that every American wears a mask. This comes as parts of Texas, parts of South Carolina and North Carolina all have started to push mask requirements.
And the World Health Organization is warning that the virus could “push health systems to the brink” in Europe if we continue to see new case numbers. The warning comes after 30 countries reported increases in the last two weeks.
