The COVID-19 pandemic has halted nearly every sport out there, from baseball to hockey to the Summer Olympics. But one result of this may be that video gaming and esports are on the rise.
Esports professional Fabian Hallsten tells Sports Illustrated that he's seeing unprecedented numbers of livestreamers watching his games. And while it's strange to celebrate the growth of his hobby because of something as harmful as the coronavirus, "if you just take that out of everything, esports is doing good because of it [the pandemic]," said Hallsten.
Hallsten also noted that newcomers are flocking to video gaming as they search for alternatives to traditional sports. Gaming and esports may be a rare source of community for sports fans during the pandemic.
The VanEck Vectors Video Gaming and eSports ETF (ESPO) has climbed year to date, hitting a 52-week high on Friday.
