From the smartphone in your pocket to the modem frustrating you in your home office, Qualcomm (QCOM - Get Report) has been instrumental in developing many of the products we use every day.

Qualcomm was founded in 1985 when seven former Linkabit employees led by Irwin Jacobs teamed together to form their own company.

What's behind the name?  Take "Quality," add "Communications," shorten it up a bit, and you have Qualcomm.

While you don't have a Qualcomm device in your pocket, you'll find the name if you look "under the hood." Since it's founding, the semiconductor and telecommunications company has been instrumental in developing the chips and technologies inside the most popular consumer products.

"We're fascinated by technology and always working to push it forward. Our job is to be impatient. That's our role in the mobile industry, and our future," says CEO Steve Mollenkopf.

What's next on the frontier for Qualcomm? We're looking at you 5G.
