CoinShares Chief Strategy Officer, Meltem Demirors, discusses bitcoin and how the retail investor can consider investing in cryptocurrencies.

CoinShares is a leading digital asset manager that offers institutional investors, like early-stage venture capital firms and hedge funds, access to crypto assets.  The company also helps crypto asset companies manage their assets.

In the last year, over $12 billion has been raised through Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) so the industry is growing.

As a result, they are becoming more regulated:

  • The IRS has taxation guidance
  • The CFTC has a market oversight committee
  • The SEC has rules and regulations on how crypto assets can be created and sold to investors

But with all that, crypto assets still are unlikely to be used as an everyday currency in America, due to our developed economy.

In addition, it still is an highly volatile asset class. Shares of Apple typically have a volatility of 20-30% a year, as compared to Bitcoin which has a volatility closer to 100%.
