Blue Chips Up More Than 200 Points on Visa Earnings, Strong GDP Report

There were big gains on Wall Street Thursday as the GDP report showed the economy is stronger than expected.

Big gains on Wall Street Thursday from the GDP report showing the economy is stronger than expected. All the major markets closed higher. The Dow Jones Industrial added 221 points. The S&P 500 closed shy of 2,000 after briefly flirting with that mark. The Nasdaq managed to end the session in the green despite being mixed for most of the day. Visa (V) carried the blue chips higher. Both Visa and MasterCard (MA) added more than 9% each after beating Wall Street's earnings estimates. Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) was another big gainer. Shares rallied after the drug maker said a trial of its lung cancer drug showed results that were better than expectations. GoPro (GPRO) and LinkedIn (LNKD) added gains ahead of their earnings reports after the bell. GoPro is expected to post earnings of $0.08 a share. LinkedIn is expected to earn $0.47 a share. On tap to report earnings Friday are Dow components and oil giants, Exxon Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX).
