Beijing is working to forge a regional trade pact at this year's annual summit of Asian Pacific leaders. The proposal will take place alongside a rival U.S-led trade deal, which seems to have stalled. 21 countries including the U.S, Japan and South Korea will meet over two days to discuss cooperation and trade initiatives. But similar proposals from the U.S and China could add a tone of rivalry to the proceedings. It's the first major international gathering hosted by China since President Xi Jinping came to power. As growth slows in China, new free trade deals could present a useful opportunity for the world's second largest economy to assert itself as a regional leader. Trade, environment and energy efficiency are all on the agenda.
