As the European Commission considers expanding the role of national competition authorities in the EU's 28 member countries, White & Case LLP partner Assimakis Komninos of the law firm's  Brussels office shares his views on ares of possible reform, including giving watchdogs better tools to do their jobs and making them more independent. 'We certainly need a rule written in an explicit manner' into EU law, he said. Komninos, who served for two years on Greece's Hellenic Competition Commission, would also like to see better cross-border coordination of national leniency programs for cartel whistleblowers in the EU, and in the longer term also on a global level.
