Police in France have arrested a man after he attacked a solider in a busy shopping district near the Louvre Museum in central Paris in an incident the Prime Minister said has "the characteristics of terrorism."

Local media reports have said the man shouted "Allahu Akbar," Arabic for "God is greatest," as he lunged at the solider with a machete. The solider then opened fire on the man but not before another solider was said to be wounded in the attack.
