American and United Airlines Borrow From Spirit's Flight Plan
Traditional airlines are cutting some of their offered amenities to compete with the fares offered by ultra-low-cost carriers.
In the growing effort to compete with ultra-low-cost carriers that include Spirit (SAVE) - Get Report and Frontier,American Airlines (AAL) - Get Report rolled out a basic economy fare on March 1 and United (UAL) - Get Report will follow suit on April 18. Delta (DAL) - Get Report first offered the fare in 2013. The basic fare abandons many of the amenities associated with these legacy airlines including assigned seats and seat upgrades.
