Activist Investing and Campaigns Against Companies Could Increase in 2017

Companies like Marathon Petroleum and Chipotle could feel more pressure from activists in 2017.

2017 might bring more assets into activist hedge funds, according to The Deal's Ron Orol. He notes that approximately $160 billion in assets is currently invested in activist hedge funds, which were having a lackluster year until the presidential election.  Activist hedge funds then saw big gains in returns in November, and are currently averaging 8.7% returns for the year. Orol believes the majority of activist campaigns will result in settlements next year, and notes there are some big activist battles brewing that will spill over into the new year. Orol says activist campaigns could escalate againstcompanies that include Samsung, Marathon Petroleum  (MPC) - Get Report  and Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) - Get Report .
