European markets rise in thin trading, but London and Paris are still below their year ago levels – unlike Frankfurt, which has managed to end the year in the black. London’s been pulled down over the last twelve months by falling oil and metals prices, and by the big supermarkets which have been in a value-destroying battle with discounters, led by German grocers Aldi and Lidl.
