We talk about stocks and the stock market all the time - but ever wonder - what really is a share of stock?
Give us 60 seconds and we'll tell you.
Well it's basically a share of ownership in a publicly-traded company that is traded on a stock exchange.
So the more stock -- or shares -- you own, the bigger piece of the company you own - that means you get to share in the more of the profits -- and losses -- you have also have more voting rights on big decisions the company needs to make.
So why would a company sell off pieces of itself?
For the cash mainly. Then it can use that money to invest in new markets, research new products, hire more workers -- whatever it needs.
And it's super easy to buy stock these days. You can even do it on your phone with online trading firms like Charles Schwab (SCHW) - Get Charles Schwab Corporation Report , TD Ameritrade (AMTD) - Get TD Ameritrade Holding Corporation Report and E-Trade (ETFC) - Get E*TRADE Financial Corporation Report .
