Sadly disasters happen.  Whether it's a hurricane, fire, tornado, earthquake or heck -- even volcano eruption-- it's important to be prepared.

And we are not not just talking about having the the proper insurance, which of course is vital.

We are talking getting your important paperwork in order

Getting the necessary paperwork together, when times are calmer, will save you angst and stress when things turn upside down, says Neal Stern, CPA of the AICPA's National CPA Financial Literacy Commission.

And he gave us some tips on what we need to pull together.

So in addition to knowing your evacuation routes and having emergency kits on-hand, you need to start gathering up your financial documents.

But give us 60 seconds and watch the video above for exactly what you need to hunt down.

Then check out Disasters and Financial Planning: A Guide for Preparedness and Recovery, a guide put together by the AICPA, American Red Cross, and National Endowment for Education (NEFE). It's full of checklists and actionable steps to take to help ensure that you are prepared for the financial impact of a natural disaster.

Just do yourself a favor and get everything together now.  You'll be so grateful you did in the event of an emergency.
