Back in June, discount grocer Aldi said that through 2018, it would open 400 new stores in the U.S., adding to its current 1,600 American locations. But Walmart (WMT) - Get Report doesn't seem to be worried as many Americans remain unfamiliar with the German grocery.

If you do decide to give the grocery chain a go, here's a few things you should know:

Bring your own bags

Not only to you bag your own groceries, but you need to provide your own bags.

If you forget, Aldi is more than happy to charge you for theirs.

Make sure you have a quarter in your pocket
The shopping carts are locked up and you need a quarter to take one.
You get your quarter back when you return it.
This helps prevent the staff from having to chase after carts in the parking lot.

Don't expect a big selection
Aldi's selection is just a fraction of a typical supermarket.
Limiting inventory helps limit prices.

Check store hours before you arrive
Store hours are often limited to keep labor costs down during slow periods of the day.

Look for Aldi-exclusive brands
The company claims their private labels can save you 50% off of the nationally recognized names.
