5 Holidays You Didn't Know Existed
We combed the calendar and found ten holidays that not only aren't celebrated in all 50 states, but also, in some states, directly contradict a corresponding federal holiday:
César Chavez Day
Date: March 31
To honor the man who championed farmer and immigrant rights, Arizona, California, Michigan, New Mexico and Wisconsin close schools and offices to commemorate the day, while Texas and Colorado observe it as an "optional holiday."
Seward's Day
Date: Last Monday of March
In 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward negotiated the the purchase of Alaska from the Russian kingdom on his own for $7.2 million. So Alaskans get the day off in his honor.
Emancipation Day
Date: April 16
This holiday marks the date in 1862 when President Abraham Lincoln signed the District of Columbia Compensated Emancipation Act that freed roughly 3,100 slaves in the District of Columbia.
Casmir Pulaski Day
Date: First Monday of March
Casmir Pulaski Day is a tribute to not only Pulaski, but Illinois' large numbers of Polish immigrants. Ferris Bueller joined that parade in the iconic scene in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Evacuation Day
Date: March 17
On March 17, 1776, the British fled for Nova Scotia and left Boston free of their influence.
