The 2020 presidential primaries and caucuses are underway, having kicked off on Feb. 3 with the Iowa caucuses. Since then, primaries and caucuses have been held across the nation as part of the United State’s process of selecting the presidential nominees for each party.

While there are Republican primaries and caucuses, President Donald Trump is the presumed nominee. In fact, seven states have cancelled their GOP primaries altogether.

Therefore, this year, all eyes are on the Democratic primaries and caucuses and the race between the two remaining plausible candidates: Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders. Tulsi Gabbard is also running, but only has two delegates to her name. As of March 18, 2020, Biden has 1,147 and Sanders has 861.

Primaries, generally speaking, are anonymous and use secret ballots, whereas caucuses are held in the open, involve conversation and debate, and require caucus-goers to physically position themselves in groups representing their chosen candidate.

Either way, primaries and caucuses exist to assign delegates to candidates. Delegates represent their state at national party conventions, which is where political parties select the nominee they will unite behind.

To become the presidential nominee, a candidate typically has to win a majority of delegates.
