California is one state where people love their luxury and high-performance sports cars which made it the perfect place for automakers to showcase their latest offerings. AutoTrader’s Michelle Krebs said some of the standouts at the Los Angeles Auto Show were ‘new sports cars from Porsche, Lamborghini, the new SL Roadster from Mercedes Benz, Alfa Romeo has the very sexy Giulia.’ The economy may have something to do with why automakers are bringing these models to market now. ‘The economy is back, the wealthier got wealthier, there’s just more exuberance in the economy and people are saying, I can splurge, I can reward myself.’ Luxury doesn’t necessarily have to come with a six-figure price tag. Krebs points to Fiat’s 124 convertible which could lead auto buyers to be a little 'less practical' even at a lower price point. For those who are a little more practical, both Jaguar and Cadillac showed off new SUVs. Krebs said they are not the gas-guzzling SUVs of the past, ‘SUVs are popular all around the globe and we don’t see an end in sight to that. We’re seeing millennials move up into the smaller ones and we’re even seeing baby boomers move down into the smaller ones.’ Auto sales are expected to continue to be strong in 2016 and that means more opportunity for automakers to move models into showrooms that may be a little more interesting than what they showcased during the depths of the recession. TheStreet’s Ruben Ramirez reports from Los Angeles.
