All of the major social networking companies have a responsibility to ensure users aren't only hearing news that they like, according to Facebook (FB) co-founder Chris Hughes.

"When it comes to the algorithms in particular that are part of Facebook, I think it's important to bear in mind that people design those - they're not handed down on stone tablets from above and with that comes a responsibility," he said.

Hughes is author of the new book Fair Shot: Rethinking Inequality and How We Earn.
