First we met Bitcoin, then other cryptocurrencies emerged -- like Litecoin and Ethereum.

Now meet Ripple. While it may make you think of a serene series of waves in the ocean, it may be your next big cyrptoasset and could outpace bitcoin.

Its price was only 25 cents about a month ago, and it's now trading at around $2. That's an increase of over 700%. The S&P 500 is up only 2.7% over the past month. 

Ripple's market cap is now around $79 billion, per CoinMarketCap.com. That's more than the market caps of iconic companies like Ford (F) and General Motors (GM) .

So will it eclipse bitcoin's close to $250 billion market cap?
