What does dog food and cereal have in common? Apparently, an owner. General Mills Inc. (GIS) is dropping $8 billion to buy organic pet food maker Blue Buffalo (BUFF) .

While you know General Mills as the staple of the standard American breakfast, the company does a lot more than fill your cereal bowl.

Beyond Lucky Charms and Cheerios, the company owns a variety of typical kitchen pantry must-haves. More than 75% of General Mills' revenue comes from North American retail and products that include Pillsbury, Yoplait and Old El Paso and more.
