Virginia Lt. Governor Ralph Northam, a Democrat, has been elected governor of the state.
With 99% of the vote counted as of 10:20 p.m. ET, Northam, a physician and Gulf War veteran, had captured 53.9% of the vote. His Republican challenger, Ed Gillespie, picked up 45% of the vote. Gillespie is a former Republican National Committee chairman.
Democrat Philip Murphy, a former executive at Goldman Sachs (GS - Get Report) , was elected governor of New Jersey. Murphy has never been elected for public office, but has served as finance chair in the Democratic National Committee under former President Barack Obama.
In New York, Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, was re-elected by a wide margin.
