Star Wars is one of (if not the) most valuable film franchises in existence. To date, the entire Star Wars franchise has grossed over $7.5 billion dollars worldwide at the box office. In fact, prior to the release of the first Star Wars film, 20th Century Fox had never made more than $37 million. 

Disney spent $4 billion to buy the Star Wars franchise from Lucasfilm in 2012, which might seem like small change given the first installment of the reboot, The Force Awakens, made over $2 billion worldwide.
